Roofing Contractor in Oradell, NJ: Repairs, Replacements and the Details That Leak
Top Roof LLC is a roofing contractor serving Oradell, NJ, about 20 to 25 minutes from our office in Englewood. Oradell is a small Bergen County borough, close enough that coming out to look at a roof here is routine rather than a special trip. A lot of the houses sit under mature trees, and shade is hard on a roof: slopes stay damp far longer after rain, moss takes hold, and valleys and gutters pack with leaves until water backs up instead of running off. Most of the leaks we find in towns like this start at a detail that stopped shedding water, not out in the middle of the shingles.
In September 2026 we removed a skylight from an Oradell roof and closed it up for good, and that job has its own page with photos. The same crew handles roof repair, full replacement and chimney flashing for Oradell homes, with a written estimate first.
RECENT ORADELL PROJECT
Skylight removal and roof closure in Oradell, September 2026
The homeowner wanted an existing skylight taken out and the roof closed, not replaced. The crew removed the unit and its curb, framed the opening with new rafters tied into the existing ones, decked it with new plywood, ran ice and water shield across the patch and blended new GAF shingles into the surrounding courses. Read the Oradell project page for the photos and the step by step.
WHAT WE DO IN ORADELL
Roofing services for Oradell homes
Skylight Removal and Installation
Removing a skylight is a framing job, not a patch: the opening gets new rafters, new decking and ice and water shield before shingles go over it. Installing or replacing one is the reverse, with the curb and flashing built into the roof system so it does not leak. Both are explained on our skylight page.
Roof Repair and Leak Diagnosis
Most of what we fix in Bergen County is water finding one weak spot: flashing at a chimney or a wall, an open valley, a cracked vent boot, a failed seal around an old skylight curb, or shingles torn up by a branch. We find where the water is getting in before we start replacing material.
- Leak tracing, valley and flashing repair
- Chimney and skylight flashing
- Debris, moss and shaded-slope problems
If a repair will hold, we say so, do the repair and leave the rest of your roof where it is. If the roof has genuinely run out of life, we say that instead of selling you a patch. More on our roof repair page.
Roof Replacement
When a roof is finished, patching it is money spent twice. A replacement means a full tear-off, new decking wherever the old plywood is soft or rotted, ice-and-water shield at the vulnerable areas, underlayment, new flashing and new GAF shingles. We are a GAF Certified contractor and we install the system to GAFโs specification.
- Full tear-off and decking inspection
- New flashing, underlayment and GAF shingles
- A straight answer on repair versus replacement
If you are weighing one against the other, we will walk the roof, show you what we are looking at, and give you both numbers. See roof replacement and residential roofing.
QUESTIONS
Oradell roofing and skylight FAQs
Yes. That is exactly what we did on an Oradell roof in September 2026. The homeowner wanted the skylight gone for good, so we took off the old unit and its curb, framed the opening with new 2×6 rafters tied into the existing framing, decked it with new plywood, covered the patched area with new ice-and-water shield, and blended new GAF shingles into the roof around it. The rest of the roof was left alone. Our scope on this work is the roof side, so ask us at the estimate how the ceiling below gets finished and who does it.
Because a skylight opening is a gap in the framing, not just a gap in the shingles. Framing usually gets cut or headed off to make room for a skylight when it goes in, so there is nothing solid spanning that space. Sheet over it without framing it back in and the decking has nothing to bear on: it can flex under snow and foot traffic, fasteners work loose, and that seam becomes the weak point on your roof, which is exactly where water is waiting. New rafters put the structure back first, so the plywood, the ice-and-water shield and the shingles sit on something that behaves like the rest of the roof. Two fair questions to ask anyone quoting it: how are you framing the opening, and does the borough want a permit for the framing.
It depends on why it is bothering you. If it leaks, dumps heat in the summer and loses it in the winter, or the seals have simply aged out, and you would not miss the daylight, removing it and closing the roof is permanent, with nothing left up there to fail. If the room below depends on that light, or you are redoing the room and want to keep it bright, a new unit with a proper flashing kit is usually the better call. Tell us how the room is used and we will tell you what we would do on our own house.
We will not quote a number sight unseen, and you should be careful with anyone who does. What drives the price is the size of the opening, how much framing it takes to span it, how much decking goes back, how the roof is reached and what it takes to work up there safely, and the age and condition of the shingles we have to blend into. If the roof around the skylight is already near the end of its life, closing one hole in it may not be the right place to spend the money, and we will say so. The estimate is free and it is on site.
We blend the new shingles into the existing roof rather than dropping in an obvious rectangle, which is how the Oradell roof was closed. Be realistic about color, though. The shingles on your house have weathered for years and the ones out of a fresh bundle have not, so on day one there can be a visible difference in tone, and we are not going to promise you it disappears. We will tell you what to expect before we start. And if the surrounding roof is close enough to the end of its life that a blended patch would stand out, we will tell you that too, instead of putting fresh shingles on a roof that needs replacing.
It comes out too. The curb is the raised wooden frame the skylight sat on, and on the Oradell roof the crew cut it free from the deck with a reciprocating saw after the unit was off. Leaving it buried under new shingles would put old, weathered framing in the middle of the new assembly, a pocket that holds water and a bump that telegraphs through the shingles.
New ice-and-water shield. It is a self-adhering membrane that bonds to the deck and seals itself around the fasteners driven through it. On the Oradell roof it went over the patched area, because the line where new plywood meets the old deck is the most likely place for water to find a way in, so it got a full layer of membrane before a single shingle went down.
