The project
This Tenafly home has a big, complex roof: a main hip roof with a second hipped wing, a pyramid-roofed tower at the front, a lower rear section over the kitchen, two skylights, two chimneys and a long run of vents and pipes. The original gray shingles had faded unevenly, with dark streaking across the slopes and granule loss on the sun-facing sides, and the homeowners wanted the roof to look as sharp as the rest of the property.
They chose GAF Timberline HDZ in Charcoal, a deep gray that gives a white house a clean, high-contrast look and hides streaking far better than a light shingle. Our drone photographed the roof before, during and after so they could see exactly what was done.
What we did
- Complete tear-off of the old shingles across every section, including the tower and the rear wing, down to the plywood deck. Tarps protected the landscaping, deck and patio, and a dumpster in the driveway kept debris off the lawn.
- Deck inspection of every sheet of plywood before anything new went on, with any soft or damaged sheets replaced.
- New synthetic underlayment over the whole deck, with ice-and-water membrane at the eaves, in every valley and around the skylights, chimneys and pipes.
- New flashing at both chimneys and both skylights, plus new pipe boots and vents, so every penetration is sealed with new material rather than reused.
- GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Charcoal with GAF starter strip along all eaves and rakes, and matching ridge cap on every hip and ridge line.
- Full cleanup with a magnetic sweep of the lawn, driveway and beds.
The result
The after photo shows an even Charcoal field across every slope, with crisp hip lines and ridge caps following the whole outline of the roof. The skylights and chimneys are flashed in cleanly, and the deep gray makes the white siding and trim stand out.
