The project
This three-story home in Englewood Cliffs had an asphalt roof that was past the point of patching: worn shingles on the main slopes, tired flashing around the dormers, and a homeowner who was done chasing small leaks. They wanted a system that would stand up to the wind that comes off the Palisades and stay looking sharp on a very visible street, and they asked for a color that would sit well with the home’s gray siding and white trim.
Englewood Cliffs sits just north of our Englewood office, so our estimator was on site the day after the call, walked the roof, photographed the problem areas, and left a written, itemized proposal the same week.
What we did
- Complete tear-off of the existing shingles down to the wood deck, with the deck inspected board by board before anything new went on.
- New synthetic underlayment across the entire deck, with ice-and-water membrane along the eaves, in the valleys and around every penetration.
- New pipe boots, vent flashing and chimney flashing — the places most roofs in Bergen County actually leak.
- GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles in Oyster Gray, laid with GAF starter strip and finished with matching ridge cap shingles across the main ridge, hips and dormers.
- Same-day cleanup: tarps around the foundation plantings, a magnetic sweep of the lawn and driveway, and all debris hauled away before the crew left.
The result
The finished roof — photographed by drone the day we wrapped up — shows the clean hip and gable lines and an even Oyster Gray field across the main roof, the dormers and the rear section. Oyster Gray is one of the most popular Timberline HDZ colors in Bergen County for a reason: it reads as a soft gray in daylight, hides dirt and pollen better than darker shingles, and works with almost any siding color.
