The project
This Cresskill home had an aging flat EPDM rubber roof that had reached the end of its service life. Flat roofs on houses are a constant maintenance item in Bergen County: water sits rather than runs off, seams and edges eventually open up, and every few years the whole surface needs attention again.
Instead of replacing rubber with more rubber, the homeowner chose to convert the roof entirely — building a new pitched roof structure over the footprint and finishing it with architectural shingles. It is a bigger job than a flat roof replacement, and it permanently changes how the roof sheds water.
What we did
- Removed the old EPDM rubber roof completely, stripping the flat roof down to its structure.
- Framed and decked a new pitched roof, installing new plywood across the newly created slope so water runs off instead of sitting.
- New underlayment over the full deck, with ice-and-water membrane at the eaves and around every penetration.
- New architectural shingles installed across the converted roof, with matching ridge cap and new vents set into the new slope.
- Full cleanup, with all the old rubber roofing and debris hauled away.
The result
The home went from a flat rubber roof that needed regular attention to a pitched, shingled roof that sheds water on its own and matches the look of the rest of the neighborhood. A conversion like this costs more up front than another rubber roof, but it removes the recurring flat-roof maintenance cycle entirely and typically adds decades of service life.
If you have a flat section on your home that keeps causing problems, a conversion is worth pricing alongside a straight replacement. We do both throughout Cresskill and the rest of Bergen County.
